Founded in 1845, the National University of Ireland (NUI), Galway is the largest and oldest university based in the West of Ireland. It is home to over 17,000 students and employs around 2,500 staff. NUI Galway is a research-led university and is ranked in the top 250 universities in the world in both the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2016/2017. Its research & teaching infrastructure is well established, of world calibre and strongly supported. In the past ten years alone, the University invested in excess of €400 million.

NUI Galway has the highest Horizon 2020 success rate among all Irish universities. In October 2013, NUI Galway was awarded the HR Excellence in Research Logo by the European Commission in recognition of its commitment in implementing the principles of European Charter and Code for Researchers. The Charter and Code includes 40 principles and requirements, which specifies the roles, responsibilities and entitlements of researchers as well as of employers and/or funders of researchers. Ranked in the top 2% of universities globally, NUI Galway has an academic community of world-leading researchers working at the forefront of their fields, and has a commitment to supporting and encouraging postgraduates in their taught and research programmes. Energy research has been identified as a strategic research priority in NUI Galway, and the ENERGISE project has the full support of the Ryan Institute, NUI Galway’s home for Environmental and Energy research.
