Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU) is one of Europe’s leading universities, with a strong track record in securing external research funding from national, European and international sources. Ranked 75th in the world and 25th in Europe in the 2015/16 QS University Rankings, LMU offers an excellent intellectual and infrastructural environment for cutting-edge research. It currently employs more than 3,000 full-time academic staff and 746 professors. Most recently, research on environment-society relations has been earmarked as one of eight high-potential areas for future development at LMU. LMU leaders in this area include the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society (RCC), an international, interdisciplinary center for research and education in the environmental humanities and social sciences with an outstanding reputation in interdisciplinary environmental and sustainability research. LMU has significant experience in successfully carrying out EU projects, supported by excellent administrative services.
Interdisciplinary projects that investigate social, environmental and policy issues related to energy generation and consumption are an integral part of LMU’s research landscape. The Department of Geography at LMU brings together staff from the natural and social sciences and is uniquely placed to lead the expansion of this field of research. Inter- and transdisciplinary studies of current and future energy systems are a central research focus within the Department. Current projects include Transformation Towards Sustainable Energy Systems (TranE) and Energy-related Innovation in the Oberland Region (INOLA).
